There are two powerful drivers in human consciousness: the desire for Love, Light and growth, and the urge to give into fear, stagnation and complacency. The desire for love and growth is generated from your soul and higher self, the fear is generated by the ego or more precisely the negative ego. As a person drawn to this article, you are one who is genuinely interested in strenthening your ability to live in spiritual harmony and to achieve personal fulfilment. Unfortunately, these desires are not enough for the tendency to shoot ourselves in the foot is of equal power unless we know how to avoid the self-sabotaging effects of fear, self-doubt, self-righteousness, and interpersonal conflict.
The negative ego is the source of all such self-sabotage. It is the demon within and every time you are affected by it you will be unable to access the love, light and guidance of your higher self.
In truth, it is quite a buzz to catch this demon by the tail. Any self-sabotaging impulse is immediately squelched once you can identify its presence in your thinking and/or feeling. However, the negative ego is a catch-me-if-you-can thief of happiness, a con artist, and a master of disguise so that when you do catch it on one occasion, it will find an alternative route as soon as it can. It is for this reason that you need to make a point of observing and clearing it on a regular basis.
This article and the exercises at the end are designed to help you do so.
Take your time to absorb the information slowly, and do the exercises. If you do not find the time to do so, you will know your negative ego has got you!
Understanding the Function of Ego
There is much misunderstanding about the function of ego. On the one hand, ego is a necessary aspect of being an incarnated human. The ego is that part of your mind that is able to distinguish your individual self as distinct from others, and separated from the material world. It helps to give your sense of unique identity.
On the other hand, however, the ego has been allowed by humanity to exceed its legitimate role. It has taken the recognition of separateness away from an appreciation and valuing of your uniqueness to dangerous, false and distressing conclusions. It makes your separateness a source of destructive competitiveness, comparison and pain.
When this happens, the healthy function of the ego turns sour: it has become negative. It then becomes the source of all your illusory fear and self-doubt. It dislikes any capacity you have for discerning truth from falsehood. The negative ego does not want you to think or feel for yourself, or accept and honour your true spiritual nature.
How Negative Ego Manifests Itself
The negative ego is a spiritual as well as a personal and social disease.
Spiritual dysfunction
At the level of spirit, we are all equal, all remarkable and all centred in the energy of love. We are drops of soul, unique drops of the creative force called by various names under the banner of God and Goddess. As an expression of soul, your human self is a one-off, never to be repeated entity, and can never be the clone of anyone else. In this sense, you are separated from others because you are, by definition, different from them. You are who you are.
The human journey is basically to ‘remember’ that you are Love, that you are uniquely valuable whatever your limitations seem to be. It is a journey to access the light, love and power of your soul energy so that you become an ever stronger and more loving expression of that soul.
However, the negative ego distorts your view of yourself.
It says that your unique nature is a sign that you are either so special you should not even bother to think of your limitations and negative impact, or so unworthy that you should not consider taking charge of life. In this guise it whispers, ‘Be happy with the crumbs that God, the Universe or more powerful other people throw your way. Personal power is not for you. You and your love are not good enough.’
If it can, it will give both these messages in the same instant. Its aim is to cut you off from your spiritual self and to sow as much discord as it can. It is, therefore, at the core of all inner doubt and interpersonal conflict.
Personal dysfunction
Because the negative ego is so pervasive, it will prevent you making any choice or decision that brings you closer to Love and to your higher self. It will tell you that maintaining your doubts, blame, self-destructive tendencies and anxiety is the best way to protect yourself from the dangers of life.
It will also stop you from acknowledging your strengths and gifts so that you do not pursue them or value them. It will often tell you that these gifts are trivial or mundane, it will be jealous of the power that others have, and it will make sure that the limitations you have are matters to be ashamed of, to hide, or deny.
It does not want you to have a balanced perspective on situations, or to be open-minded.
Social dysfunction
While most people associate negative ego with bigheadedness and arrogance, its more common social ploy is to tell you that you are less than others, and that for some reason you are really not good enough, never will be, and don’t even think about it in case you become a tall poppy and get cut down!
Naturally, negative ego is the core of all conflict in community. It is the basis of all the ‘isms’ that divide us. It is also feeds on any chronic limitation you might have in terms of health, money, or developing competence in certain skills. It relishes beliefs that tie you to a painful past.
Whichever form it takes, negative ego feeds on self-doubt and illusory fears. It enjoys promoting these through obsessive thinking and/or ungrounded emotional responses. It is the basis of blame and unexamined judgements about other people. It loves the spiritual laziness or fear that prevents a person observing truthfully the facts of the situation, and his or her own contribution to a problem.
Overcoming Negative Ego
Recognition
The main defence you have against negative ego is a commitment to identifying it. Here is a long list of the symptoms of its existence. Of course, these responses to difficulty are so common they are regarded as part of human 'nature'. However, in each case they are interfering with your ability to live in calm and love. They need to be dissolved.
Fear clearing
Clear your specific and chronic fears regularly because fear is the negative ego’s chief diet..
Know it always tells lies
The negative ego likes to make you think that it is so powerful it can knock your higher self’s guidance aside. It may do this by telling you lies that sound like truth but are in fact generalisations that suggest hopelessness, powerlessness and a miserable future: Examples: Your partner is an unmitigated horror, your kids are totally out of control, you will never get a good job, you will always be poor, sick or rejected.
Keep observing its changing forms
Once you have caught it out in one situation, the negative ego will quickly sniff out the next vulnerable spot. It will change form to suit its plans.
When I first ‘met’ my negative ego, it appeared in my mind as a Scrooge-like magician, sitting in front of a Bunsen burner with apothecary jars labelled with those attitudes that at the time undermined me: self-doubt, anxiety, panic, denial, fear of tall poppy syndrome, etc. Beside it was a filing cabinet with a sign: “Formulae for Suzie’s Every Mood”. Grinning, Scrooge poured drops from the currently appropriate jars into the red-hot crucible, which then emitted the most disgusting smell. This odour rose like steam into my conscious mind, setting me off in a fruitless search for the source of the poison. After I confronted Scrooge, the negative ego later returned as a fake angel, telling me that Scrooge had learned his lesson, and I need never worry again!
Identify the part your negative ego is playing every time you are in conflict
Negative egos like playing together. However, if you firmly refuse to let your own negative ego play a game of You lose/I win, the other party will have far less chance of engaging in a conflict. You will also be able to negotiate win/win solution.
Some Exercises for Identifying Negative Ego

Here is an excerpt from a personal growth money journal I wrote back in the day.
It is a good example of how to make sure you keep money energy flowing into your life through joy in having it. It is not necessary to have a lot of money to enjoy life, but it is essential to have gratitude and pleasure in what you have so that money energy flows more easily.
The lessons I learned here, though not comprehensive, are one I refer to from time to time to keep me on track.
June 14
I have been studying how to improve my relationship to money. I learned that money energy is attracted to pleasure and joy rather than to mere survival requirements.
So, I devised an exercise for myself that involves finding a way to enjoy spending money. I have always enjoyed working and receiving money that way, but I have never thought of how I get joy out of spending it unless it is for big ticket items like going overseas to Spain – a place that for me is a living example of a society that values joy.
As I focused on the idea that I had to observe what spending gave me joy – as opposed to just having to buy the essentials – I discovered that I never think of ‘joy-spending’. Therefore, I went to my greengrocer and scanned all the possible purchases that would give me a sense of joy. The vegetables are so beautiful there, but buying the usual weekly items is same ol’ and it occurred it is far from an addiction. What gives me joy is to experience something that is novel. I am a bit of novelty junkie.
My eye lighted on some honeycomb. I love honeycomb. I love its golden colour, the intricate lace of the cells, the smell and the strange way that when you eat it the honey dissolves to leave only the clean wax that is a kind of oil pulling experience. When I eat honeycomb I feel the wonder that is the gift of bees to humanity. I heard that a teaspoon of honey is all that a bee makes in its lifetime. I make a point of feeling gratitude for bees every time I use it.
I bought my 250g of honeycomb at $17.95, a price far beyond the approval of my inner accountant.
June 15
Now that I have a handle on the idea of looking for joy purchases, I began to think what actually gives me joy other than novelty. Anything that helps me feel relaxed in some way was the next item on my list today. I went searching for my favourite, quite-hard-to-find, organic maple syrup. Buying something that I enjoy but feels ‘safe’ is good.
Unfortunately, I found that I was not in a joyful mood at all! I felt tired, unmotivated, somewhat anxious. This was clearly a time when I could not push through to joyful purchases. So instead, I focused on clearing the anxiety and stress by doing some dancing. I chose some unfamiliar music and let my body answer its rhythms. Was good, the energy returned but I gave up on finding the syrup.
June 16
Today I decided to look at what my body likes in clothing. It definitely likes soft, easy and fresh. So, I looked for some bamboo t-shirts online. I found a nice one at $44.95. But when I thought I should buy it for ‘joy’, it was a step too far. I don’t really need a new t-shirt. I can make do with the tatty old ones that are hidden under my jumpers. My discomfort in spending money on everyday items that don’t need extra money seems to have me by the throat.
Then I realised that each time I see those tatty old T-shirts it sucks my joy away. I tell myself I don’t have the money to have fresh ones. This is a ridiculous lie – Target has perfectly good ones. Still, I don’t buy them. I suppose I think of joy as something exciting beyond ordinary necessary comfort, but extra comfort and freshness is indeed a joy. In the end I buy the T-shirt.
June 17
Today I bought some steak to casserole with prunes and stout. This is not exactly a joy project, but it fits the bill of novelty as I haven’t made that recipe and I find that finding new ones that really work is a great pleasure – even if the numbers of new ones I want to repeat are limited.
As it turned out, the result was okay but not joyful. But I did find a recipe for Pear and Apple Crisp that was a great delight. Experimenting to find the joy in ordinary life and spending the money on it seems to be important skill to develop.

One of the students of our online courses wrote recently.
‘When I was younger it was easier to read personal growth books and incorporate the advice. Now I am finding that when I read the information, there is a little voice saying "yeah, nah, that's not real ....”.
However, I keep wondering why I am also not using the tools I have learned in your courses to my full advantage. They certainly have worked and are ‘real’ to me, but I find I am not doing them.
Having said that, I still find it difficult to commit to all the other things I know are good for me - regular mindfulness, physical exercise, and positive thinking.
I don't know if it is because, subconsciously, I am scared of the change? …I just know that I am getting to the stage where I know I need to do something because my anxieties are building up, but it is almost as if I have a resistance to change …’*
This student’s problem is common among people who become fascinated by a wealth of information about personal/spiritual change. They become addicted to it, but after a time they discover, not only that they don’t change, but also that they begin to resist committing to the things that do make a difference.
So why?
Here is my reply…
Regarding your first comment about doubting spiritual information, my answer depends on what material you are reading when you hear the little voice. It is possible that your mistrust is an intuitive warning from your higher self that the material is not for you. However, if it is not, here are some questions you can ask yourself to find out if it’s worth persisting.
Number one! When you are looking at personal growth information, do you have a definite goal in mind? Or are you just reading for the sake of finding interesting facts? These days just knowing stuff isn’t enough. It’s time to put knowledge to work. It’s time to let your spiritual self’s gifts and perspectives have tangible effect. Your higher self wants results, and it will lead you towards effective practical solutions. Therefore, it needs you to have clear goals such as being calmer, more self-trusting, more self-empowered, etc.
If you do have a goal in mind, check if an interesting concept is supported by practical methods to make the desired growth happen? That is, if your goal is to be less fearful in a certain situation and someone advises you to be more grounded that advice will likely hold good in principle. (Staying grounded is always helpful when coping with anxiety.)
However, the more next important question is: Does the advisor provide a practical strategy for staying grounded?
Finally, if you have done your best to follow instructions on staying grounded, notice if that strategy did in reality make you less anxious in the situation you are currently facing.
In short, what I am saying is that any self-growth information and/or technique must be monitored in real life and time to assess whether it is effective or not for you as an individual.
Sadly, there is no technique or healing modality that has all the answers all of the time and for all individuals, so it is up to each person to search for what works for them. Fortunately, once you decide you genuinely want an answer, your higher self and spiritual guide will make sure you find it. I suspect your higher self has indeed spoken when you sense that it is fear of change that is the problem.’
*In the case of our student, the questions I posed led to her to conclude that her resistance to using self-growth experiential tools was, as she and I suspected, a fear of change. Fortunately, we have a technique to release fear of change, which moved her forward.

One of the main aims of Reach Potential is to offer world healing through energetic techniques specific to the Siramarti Personal Growth Process on a regular basis *
Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about World Light Healing and how Siramarti techniques support it.
Frequently Asked Questions about Siramarti World Light Healing
Q. What is World Light Healing
A. Individuals who lead others do so by direct action but also through the power of their personal energy field, aka resonance, which can uplift or modify the attitudes of those around them. You may be aware of this through your experiences of both good and poor leaders.
Some people, however, desire to consciously lead positive change through injecting the energy of Love into world situations that require physical healing, a transformation of negative social attitudes, or to support those who are working tangibly to improve the environment. We call these World Light Healers.
One of the best ways to become a truly effective Light Healer is through learning how to consciously utilise the energy of high frequency Evolved Love.
Q: I know of the term Lightwork. What is the difference between that and Light Healing?
A: The term Lightworker was coined by Michael Mirdad in the 1970s or early 80s. However, we make a distinction between the concepts of Lightwork and Light Healing.
Light is information in energetic form. Lightwork refers to the ability to gather useful truths from the unconscious for the benefit of others. The Lightworker may have any number of roles from psychic medium to teacher, mentor or intuitive channel.
World Light Healing is a form of Lightwork for the planet, but the strength of its power to heal in dependent on the healer’s ability to combine their embodied personal light with Evolved Love and direct it to a specific situation.
Siramarti Light Healers integrate spiritual Light with their own desire to Love, heal or support via energetic methods.
Q: What is Evolved Love?
A: Love is an umbrella term for the many frequencies of energy that create and/or maintain well-being for humans, animals, or the planetary environment in different aspects and flavours, such as healing, comfort, compassion, caring, joy, wonder, and spiritual connection, etc.
Evolved Love energy is the kind of love that specifically lifts human consciousness to a higher frequency in which fear is reduced, ego is cleared, and individuals actively seek their greatest potential through integrating their spiritual powers within their unique human nature. Evolved Love is inclusive of everyone and everything and its frecquency is the basis for creating a better world than the one we currently experience. It is the foundation for new consciousness upon which the future of the world will be built.
Q: How does Light Healing change a situation?
A: Before any change in a situation can occur, extra energy must be injected into it. (Changing the position of your furniture requires that you put energy into doing that. Duh!). In other words, focusing your thought precedes the manifestation of a tangible outcome. Those who create healing or positive change focus their whole of self energy to ‘visualise’ an improvement in a dysfunctional situation. This intention harnesses energy for a particular result.
The more World Light Healers can join together in a group effort, the stronger its energetic impact on those individuals and situations that are engaged in resolving or adapting to a specific problem, whether that be in the human or natural world.
Q: Why does Light Healing training improve healing power?
A: Siramarti Light Healing focuses on creating a specific change in the energetics of a given person or situation by radiating one’s own power to increase the well-being and spiritual growth of the other. We are not just 'sending healing love' without specifying what outcome we want. The clearer the focus, the better the healing.
However, it is also important that the healer's own energy is at an optimal frequency to bring about change. In Light Healing training, techniques are supplied to strengthen the unique power of an individual to bring about healing. **
Q. Can Light Healing be used to help anything or anyone?
Light healing is suited to improving the situation of individuals, locations such in your home or favourite park, groups of people you lead or belong to, and those supporting the repair of the environment, others' health, animal welfare, etc.
However, receptivity to World Light Healing varies according to the recipients’ willingness to receive it. This means that the manifestation of a healing in the real world may not be immediately apparent. However, the energy remains available to the higher self of the other or the Spirit governing a particualar area to use when they are ready or want it.
Q. Can I practise Light Healing if I do not know anything about Siramarti techniques?
A. If you follow the weekly instructions for World Light Healings provided on our Light Healers Facebook page, you will be contributing to Light Healing automatically. However, if you wish to strengthen the effectiveness of that healing we recommend that you consider joining the first of our self-guided courses on Thinkific or one of the workshops advertised in the top menu.
Q. I am a Reiki channel. How does Siramarti Light Healing differ from what I already practise?
A. In some ways it does not differ! But what the Siramarti visualisations do is significantly increase the power of your healing through refining your own resonance. All spiritual healing relies on the channel's ability to hold and radiate love. Love energy is diluted if the channel is not fully aligned with their own soul power. Where you have a naturally strong capacity, that is where your healing can be most powerful. For example, if you are naturally compassionate, you can most easily bring compassion to painful situations. If you are very good at organising projects, so that organisational energy can help to bring order to disruption, and so on. Our Light Healing techniques make full use of your strengths.

There is no doubt that the world as we have known it has come to an end. And along with the chaos and collapse, tides of fear and grief and rage wash over us all. Yet you, who read these words, have a deep spiritual belief in the power of Spirit and of Love that conquers all.
It is the likes of you, the believers in Love, who hold the keys to the changed and brighter future that is to be forged in the decades ahead. Those who believe, feel and especially act upon Love in practical ways are the ones who have the small answers that, in combination, lead to grand solutions.
In the meantime, you ride in the same boat as the rest of the world: a boat threatening to be overcome by a perfect storm of despair that is the very opposite of the Love that you believe in.
So how do you ride that storm? How do you make Love prevail?
Everyone is a microcosm of the potential for Love to prevail at the collective level. Therefore, your personal capacity to handle fear and radiate love is important not only for yourself but for all those close to you. If enough people do this, so the world can become the place you would like it to be.
Here is how you can do it.
Step 1: You must let go of your fear, even for the briefest of moments. *
The letting go of fear allows you to come back to a balanced perspective: to be able to see the unfortunate truth of things but at the same time to find a silver lining in the darkest clouds.
Letting go of fear helps the Light of your inner wisdom or higher self open the way to alternatives. It gives you relief, relaxation, and mental clarity. Instead of allowing yourself to be mesmerised by the panic that others feel, this Light opens the door to taking a practical step out of a difficulty.
One way to clear fear is to write out your fears in as much detail as you can, letting yourself feel the fears in the body as you write. When that is done, destroy the doeument but also give it to your higher self or guides and ask them to transform the fear into love energy that you can absorb. Imagine them surrounding you in this love energy. Breathe it in or put your hand over your heart chakra and feel it moving into your chest and through your body.
Step 2: Create the energy of Love within yourself
Even though you may have absorbed some love in the fear-clearing exercise above, you must keep doing it. Anything that brings well-being into any part of you holds the energetic frequency of Love.
The creation of Love energy is not at all difficult. Once anxiety, worry or anger has been expelled from your mind and body, Love is to be found everywhere: in comforting friends or pets, in humour, in nature, in inspirational ideas, fresh air, in doing those things that give you joy, in physical activities that delight such as swimming in surf, and so on. The list is endless.
However, the trick to riding the storm is to find the exact form of Love you need at any given situation.
To find what exact form of Love you need ask yourself this question:
‘What small step can I take right now to calm myself, to help my body, or to bring in mental clarity or the peace of spiritual connection?’
Once you have the answer, act upon it. Don’t procrastinate or tell yourself it is too simple or obvious. Act and observe the effect on your feeling state. If you feel a little bit better, you have allowed a little Love in; you have conquered fear for now.
Certainly, that answer is not going to last long. The waters of fear are constantly on the move so you will need to repeat this question and act on the answer many times. However, if you make it a habit, you will be able to steer your boat through any storm into calmer waters, and even the harbour of your dreams.

I have revelled in three restful weeks by not letting myself be drawn into any problems at all. What a relief!
It is true that my husband contracted a mild dose of Omicron and so that, from that point of view, I would have expected to feel anxious and upset. I did not. Instead, I took a short break from work, enjoyed the practical tasks of prettying up our house for sale and dreaming new dreams for the future. My sons reported some wonderful new things happening in their worlds. A dear friend I had not seen for three years visited as soon as we came out of isolation. Everything felt good.
On the other hand, I had people ask me to commiserate over their apparently intractable problems (for which they already know the answers) or checking on my own situation in the clear expectation that any moment I would be struck down by the death-dealing disease. In short, these people were not heeding Monty Python’s advice to look on the bright side of life. The energy of pessimism with its various flavours of fear was thick in the collective psyche and it gradually started to get me down. This irritated me no end, and I had to fight to extricate myself from doom and gloom.
So why is it that these diametrically opposed perspectives occur? Why can one person feel good about their lives in the midst of drama, while another caves into discomfort? The answer basically comes down to what choices a person decides to make. Are you deciding to focus on what is good in life, do you look for the silver lining in dark clouds, or do you let yourself spend your life energy on stuff that is temporary, relatively trivial, or beyond your immediate control?
Of course, as a spiritually aware person, you know what you ‘should’ do, but the truth is that mass conscious anxiety can be overwhelming. If you find yourself in that position, we recommend that you begin your ‘recovery’ from the current addiction to gloom, by starting all your inner work to adjust a difficulty you are experiencing by using any of those techniques that direct your focus and energy away from negativity and into gratitude, the relief of stress, or into any activity or perspective that helps you to connect to the love and hope for the future. There is plenty of that around if you open your eyes and heart to it.
If you are a member of the Reach Potential site, the Silver membership visualisation “Disconnecting from Mass Conscious Negativity”. is very good. I personally find that the "Log Cabin" gives me a better night’s sleep when I have no conscious control of what energy I am taking on board. You can also find an excellent stress relief visualisation on our Free course here.

Back in the good old days, a person generally knew what life they were likely to lead. You chose a career based on your family expectations, married (even if you were secretly gay) and lived a routine life until retirement or the children left the nest. Then you volunteered for a community organisation or took up gardening or filled your time playing pool with friends in the pub. It was all very straightforward. Only a few eccentric people stepped off these well-trodden paths.
Not so today. There are no longer any of the old paths to rely upon. Nothing can be taken for granted. Plans and expectations can be swept away on the whim of a virus or a climate change catastrophe, or the unexpected death of an important relationship. Everyone is confronted with having to rely upon themselves for their choices and directions in this brave new world.
We are on an adventure into unknown terrain in which we are all pioneers.
However, making decisions about what to do and where to go amid pressure and chaos is very difficult. The stress of uncertainty can lead to rash decisions or it makes a person mentally and emotionally rigid. Without viable, flexible solutions, matters get even worse and anxiety rachets up to unbearable levels.
So, what can one do? How can you make choices that will begin to restore your sense of stability and safety?
There is one infallible Siramarti solution. This is to decide what essence of life you want, and then create an experience of that essence every single day. This simple focus means that at least some of your day’s activities can be relied upon to be comfortable in the way you want it to be. And gradually, step by step, the positive essence you seek becomes a certain path.
Suppose the essence you seek is a life of minimal anxiety? Take a step today to bring about a sense of inner peace: maybe you might sit in the local park for half an hour enjoying nature? Take a second but different step tomorrow that will also bring calm: tidy up that mess in the cupboard that is quietly nagging at you. On the third day let go of a negative assumption about your situation that is creating anxiety. The Good Work Book: How to enjoy your job & make it spiritually fulfilling has a powerful visualisation for Changing a Mental Belief that will be helpful there. (See our Store for Amazon link).
Maybe, like one of my clients, you believe that you have no belief at all that you can make daily life successful. In her case, I suggested that she make a list of at least one achievement in the areas she was concerned about - parenting and daily management - each day. Within a fortnight her confidence had risen immeasurably. And her list had grown from one a day to five or six. Try it out for yourself.
Of course, you want a lot more than one essence to feel your life is enjoyable and secure, but the same principle applies. Take small steps consistently towards each of your ends: stress relief, comfort, financial security, better health, freedom to enjoy your own time, or harmonious relationships, etc.
Small steps are the key to success because they entirely within your control. They provide the psychological stability and sense of being in charge amid the chaos of the present and an unknown future. However, If you bite off more than you can chew, your decision will, like one of those famous New Year’s resolutions, die a sad and early death.
Developing a habit of consciously experiencing what you want on a daily basis has effects far beyond the sense of being in charge. It creates profound changes your energetic resonance which benefits you in mysterious ways. People who interview the calm person for a job senses their reliability. Inner calm helps you to find smart ways to earn or conserve money. Your body, enjoying the physiological benefits of a relaxed attitude, is able to re-balance to allow for healing of disease.
Suddenly you feel that you are living in an oasis of safety and security no matter the turmoil around you.

My Number One sporting hero was tennis player Ashleigh Barty. What made her so special to me is not so much her exceptional achievements on court as her stand-out resilience. She is a person everyone can learn from.
In simple terms, resilience is the capacity to bounce back from adversity. However, it is a quality that is far more complex than that. The resilient person has a deep belief in themselves and their capacities, which is like a thick core of rubber that gives them their bounce-back mentality. This core allows them to remain calm, steady and positive when challenges come their way. So, Ash does not get panicked by setbacks but stays in charge of herself. She trusts that everything will be okay because she knows she can regain her equilibrium.
However, resilience is also characterised by flexibility as much as equilibrium. Ash maintains her focus on her goals by moving with the moment, adjusting her whole self to the situation at hand. The ability to adjust is based in awareness. Resilient people are awake to situations, to their own emotional and mental reactions, and the behaviour of those around them.
It’s easy to see Ash Barty as a remarkable. However, it is a mistake to think that the qualities that make her resilient are a given by birth. Resilience is not something that is inherited; it is something each of us can develop. It is also something every individual must develop if they are to survive and move forward in the chaos of change.
When times are unprecedented as they are now, a special kind of resilience is essential: it is whole-of-self resilience that can withstand short-term events, such as a hurricane, as well as slow-moving, persistent issues, such as living with financial stress, constant social change or chronic health problems.
Resilience of this kind accepts the ups and down, the shocks and challenges of living in a world where circumstances and can and do turn on the throw of a dice It allows you to move forward with spiritual integrity, even when a situation is frightening or painful.
Strategies for Building Whole Self Resilience
Body
Resilience begins with increasing the vitality of the physical body. If you are tired, unwell or unfit, your body cannot resist mental and emotional stress. Therefore, to build whole-self resilience, start by being aware of the body. Review its needs by regularly observing its immediate needs and acting on that information. Give it that which makes it feel happy and strong. We have a PDF on that in our Freebie section.
Practical Tip 1 Take a moment right now to pay attention to your body. Does it need anything to make it feel more comfortable or alive? A drink? A stretch? A breath of fresh air? If so, make sure you address that need as soon as possible. (If you find it difficult to be aware of your body, we recommend the Reach Potential Silver Membership techniques: Being in the Body: Lessons 1 and 2.)
Emotions
Once the body is healthy, emotional resilience becomes easier. Emotional resilience is created by allowing the emotional self to live and flow in the present, accepting the dark times while making sure you immerse it in positive experiences that give comfort, pleasure, wonder or calm. The emotionally resilient person is able to acknowledge, and then let go of counterproductive responses, such as fear, fury and worry, so that they can return to equilibrium.
Practical Tip 2 Sit with yourself. Are you aware of any physical discomfort? If you know your body is basically healthy, those sensations are signals of emotional discomfort. Use any technique you are familiar with, or a Siramarti technique to release that energy. Then turn on your endorphins by closing your eyes to remember an experience that gives you gives you delight or joy. Make it a habit to seek activities daily that give you emotional excitement or delight as these are the ones that promote vitality.
Our Inner Peace All Day Every Day online course provides visualisations to clear stress, anger, anxieties and worries, as well as showing you how to bring joyful energies into your consciousness.
Mental Self
Mental resilience allows for flexible problem-solving. It means letting go of those learned strategies and mental beliefs that are no longer working as they used to. Mental resilience involves having clarity about the realities of the situation and the capacity to reframe a problem so that it can be addressed in a different way.
Practical Tip 3 Make a habit of asking yourself, “Could I find a better, or more efficient way to do this?’ If you find that you have a fixed mental belief that says something cannot or should not happen, change that belief. If you do not have your own method for that, you can find an effective one in our book The Good Work Book: How to enjoy your job & make it spiritually fulfilling, a link to which can be found in our Store at https://www.reachpotential.com.au/bstore
Spiritual Self
Resilience involves two kinds of response to the difficulties of enforced change. The first is adaptation. Physical, emotional or mental adaptation creates resilience by helping you bounce back into essentially the same state of stability as you had before. However, if adaptation is not possible, it is essential to bounce forward by transforming your responses to difficulty by finding better or inspired solutions to replace the old ones.
Transformational change is the basis of spiritual resilience because inspirational solutions are the result of being able to tap into one’s spiritual wisdom and apply them in a practical way to the real world. This is, of course, Reach Potential’s primary aim in sharing the Siramarti processes.
Practical Tip 4 The more you cultivate a felt connection to the higher self, the more you are open to spiritual solutions based on its wisdom and love for you. There is a PDF in our Freebie section of the website called Holding the Hand of Your Higher Self that everyone can enjoy.
